Hiperpigmentarea cutanată este definită ca o modificare a culorii pielii normale, de tip brun (maroniu), negru sau albastru închis. Cauza cea mai frecventă este hipermelanoza (cre?terea pigmentării melanice). Hipermelanoza poate fi:
? melanocitară = cre?terea numărului de melanocite de la nivel epidermic;
? melanotică = cre?terea activită?ii de sinteză melanică, cu număr normal de melanocite;
? prezen?a anormală de melanocite ?i/sau melanină în derm-explică culoarea gris-albăstruie.

Hiperpigmentarea poate fi de cauză non-melanică:
? prezen?a unui pigment: hemoglobină (hiperpigmentare de cauză hematică, când apar depozite de hemosiderină);
? depunerea de caroten (hipercarotenemie) ? culoare galben-oranj;
? prezen?a de pigment anormal (de tip medicamentos).

Examinarea cu lampa Wood poate eviden?ia contrastul între pielea de culoare normală de cea cu hipermelanoză pigmentară epidermică (dacă supraîncărcarea este dermică contrastul este greu de observat).
