Professor Stanisław Leopold Zabielski was born on November 13, 1939 in Puławy (Poland). He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy in Łódź (WAM) in 1964. He was associated with the Military Medical Institute since 1974, in 1990 he was appointed to the position of Head of the Dermatology Clinic, which he held until 2010. Consultant and Chief Specialist of the Polish Army in the field of Dermatology and Venereology; consultant of the military health service for dermatology and venereology (2002-2010); consultant of the military health service in the field of infectious diseases (2005-2010).
In 1975 he received the academic degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences for his dissertation entitled: “Self-injury of the skin in conscript soldiers treated at the Dermatology Clinic of the IKP WAM in the years 1970-74.” Based on his habilitation thesis entitled: “Selected genetic and immunological indicators in the course of psoriasis in young men.” On February 27, 1995, he obtained the degree of habilitated doctor of medical sciences. Since December 9, 2002, professor of medical sciences.
In his scientific research, he dealt with disorders of liver function in patients with psoriasis, etiopathogenesis and treatment of psoriasis, allergic diseases and the usefulness of new external dermatological drugs, threats of Lyme disease in soldiers stationed in the north-eastern part of Poland, early detection and treatment of pre-cancerous conditions and skin cancers, atopic dermatitis.
The professor was the author or co-author of over 150 articles, supervisor and reviewer of doctoral and habilitation theses, took an active part in the scientific life of the country, belonged to scientific societies, including: Polish Dermatological Society, where he served as a member of the main board for several years, and in the Warsaw Branch of the Polish Dermatological Society – deputy chairman. For many years he was a member of the Professional Ethics Committee of the Military Medical Chamber.
He participated in the editorial work of journals, including “Our Dermatology Online”, “Przegląd Dermatologiczny”, “Dermatologia Kliniczna i Praktyczna” – member of the editorial committee; “Polski Merkuriusz Lekarski” – member of the Program Council; “International Medical Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research” – member of the Reviewers’ Council; “Medical Science Monitor” – member of the International Reviewers’ Group.
For his scientific work he received awards, including: Minister of National Defense (1976), Institute of Venerology of the Medical Academy (1984), Minister of National Defense (1982), Golden Badge of the Polish Red Cross and for exemplary and many years of service he was awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1990), Medal of the National Education Commission.
On January 14, 2012, for promoting the Polish Army, saving the health and lives of Polish soldiers, dedicated service for the sick and suffering, as well as for cooperation with military chaplaincy, he was awarded the Milito pro Christo medal by the military bishop of the Polish Army.
