Dr Alina Gómez Cuevas is a dermatologist at the Metropolitan Hospital in Managua. She has 25 years of clinical experience. She is a graduate of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN) and is also qualified as an epidemiologist. Dr Gómez is known for her research on tropical diseases such as leprosy and leishmaniasis and has collaborated with several NGOs in giving participatory workshops on these diseases in many different parts of Nicaragua. In 1996 she participated in the first study to identify arsenic poisoning in drinking water in residents of the Sebaco Valley, Matagalpa. She has since been involved in several other field studies in Matagalpa, Chontales and Leon, as an independent investigator and consultant for UNICEF and PAHO (WHO) in the problem of arsenic poisoning in Nicaragua. Dr Gómez has presented her findings at national and international conferences and she has published several scientific papers, most recently “Chronic arseniasis in El Zapote, Nicaragua” (In: Natural Arsenic in Groundwaters of Latin America. Bundschuh, J et al Vol 1 Arsenic in the environment 2009).
